FTP - short for File Transfer Protocol - is a type of site normally setup for companies and individuals sharing a large number of files or large size files. Often, people will resort to attaching these files to emails. They quickly find out the limitations of their email accounts or corporately mandated email box size limitations. With your own FTP site, you are able to upload and download files without regard for email limitations. Some uses for FTP sites include sharing large drawing files, high resolution photo and graphics files and more.
Another use for these accounts is to host pictures for display in discussion forums. There are severe limitations within discussion forums for attaching photos within the forum framework - off-site hosting (via an FTP account) is the best way to control your images that are displayed. Depending on your requirements, you might be able to save some cost on your hosting or FTP account by utilizing a subdomain. The difference between a standard domain and a subdomain on a Cebsource hosting account include:
- Domains use either dedicated IP addresses or shared IP addresses, Subdomains only use shared IP addresses
- Domains can use an encrypted SSL license for eCommerce solutions, Subdomains cannot
- Domains have an annual registration fee, Subdomains do not (we cover the main domain fees)
What does this all mean? Quite simply, a domain's syntax is http://www.domain.com, where as a subdomain's syntax is http://subdomain.domain.com. With a subdomain, you only get to choose the first part of the address (the subdomain part). With a standard domain, you choose the primary domain name, however you also get the recurrring fees and hosting fees. If you are not hung up on what your web address reads, you can save some cost by using a subdomain account.
